Joe Paterno, the legend who got screwed.

So for those of you who aren't sport fans, have probably heard about the molestation charges and the scandal that accompanied it at Penn State University. In the midst of this scandal, a man who did what he was supposed to has been fired, why you ask, because he didn't do the right thing. Let's see, when he received reports about the alleged situations, he went to his superiors and informed them of what he had been told and they left the situation be, not joe Paterno, his superiors did. How asinine do you have to be to fire a man for doing what protocol tells him to do. I'm sorry for the rant but I just feel that man who has been a legend ever since I was child is being ousted and blamed for something he tried to correct. Place yourself in his shoes, would you be able to go before your superiors and tell them something so vile had happened?

My iPhone will never work quite right again.

So for any of you who missed out on the news, Steve Jobs left us yesterday. Last night, some friends and I were sitting around talking about and one of them said, why should I care that another millionaire died. I at first was mildly offended. So I said to him, do u like your playstion 3, or your android based phone. His immediate reply was duh. I said thank thy dead millionaire, cause if it wasn't for him most of the phones and gaming devices we use everyday are because of the many discovers and inventions of steve jobs. So just think what would be the world be like if steve jobs would have said apple's a bad idea it will never work. Well one things for sure, this iPhone I'm typing on probably wouldn't be here.

hand holding- its not just for hippies.

Well hello there interwebs, I havent blogged in quite a few days, more like months but who is really counting. Anyways so of course the reason I decide to is that I had a thought and I want you to know it so here it goes:

Me being the great pacifist/humanitarian  of the 21st century that I am, I was thinking about how people show affection, I thought of the more serious ways sex, public groping, bromances, kissing, grabbing/slapping of the buttocks, etc. Then I thought to my self, self there are alot of ways to show some you care. So self said back to me, what is before all these other things that you see people do that sparks the constant back forth of affection sharing.... a simple touch. For me I was more thinking of how it works in a relationship and 9 out of 10 times, the affection rituals begin with simple hand holding. Now by now this sounds like a spastic shot gun blast of a thought... but stick with me and ill make a point eventually.  For those of you that are romantically involved think of the first time you and your significant other went on a date, watch a movie awkwardly on your parents couch... what was the first thing you did to show that person that u liked them, besides make a stupid comment on how nicely their shoes were tied, you more then likely held hands with them, and I bet the birds sang and the sun shined down upon the moment and all was right with the world, correct? Why is that? It is simple, holding hands gives a sense of stability, trust, caring, fellowship. We feel like nothing is the matter, as long as that person never lets go. Think of all the different situations happy and sad that you see people holding hands, when some passes on, we hold hands to let those who are struggling most that with out saying a word we are there. When we are in pain, we hold someones hand to let them no that they will be ok, when we are date/married to someone we hold hand not only to show affection, but to tell others that you and that person have a bond unlike any other in your life, you hold hands when you pray to feel a sense of reverence and community.

So hear is my point, Next time you hold hands with someone , think of what you are really saying to them and cherish that person, for they ultimately feel the same way for you.

day after yesterday...

or today if you will. Today was seriously out of my comfort zone on so many levels. We went to west haven, which is a place for mentally handicapped adults. We get there and immediately the people there start hugging you and just loving you UNCONDITIONALLY, it was so humbling. anyrate i had to help lead songs which i cant really sing so that pushed me out there, but none of them really cared they were just excited to sing songs. Followed by feeding time, that literally made me feel minuscule, having to feed someone b/c they couldnt physically do it... OMG talk about walking away changed... Thank you God for the ability to be a 'whole' person. But i will say this i learned more today about selflessness and compassion then i ever have probably in my entire life... epic mind blowing day.

i dont even know what day it is.

Well here we are on day something or another in jamaica... I mean i cant really tell you how long ive been here with out thinking and that is well more then i wanna do right now lol. Anyways, today was alot of fun, we built some super sketchy, i cant emphasize sketch enough, scaffolding out of small trees and 4ft pieces of 1x4. We only finished round about the first eighth of it and im pretty sure i would never stand on it. Then from there due to scheduling mishaps we had a little down time, then went to a small neighborhood and did athletic camps, they were more like mass games of basketball, frisbee and crafts lol... all in all a good day.

Jamaica!

So im here in jamaica, the past few days have been jawesome. The first day we went to an infirmary(hospital for disabled patience) then to an actual hospital. Then today we went to orphanages and omg the kids were so desperate for just simple love, it truly broke my heart. I am so blessed to have a family who has always been there for me and has always loved me. At the first orphanage, we went to we met a lot of the younger children and babies and played with them for what seemed like hours and hours, I met two little boys personally named Sanjay and Christopher. They just wanted to be held and played with... they ran me ragged lol. Then the second orphanage we went to we played dodgeball, with a lot of the kids, it was so much fun... i mean come on who doesnt love a good game of dodgeball. Then we quit playing and began doing handstands with them... seeing jimmy goddard attempt to do a one armed hand stand is a sight that i practically indescribable, but if u know him u can just only imagine. Well that is all for know

hmm

well this is my first post since my great return to the us, almost 2.5 months ago now. I have debated whether or not continuing the blog, i decided to cause sometimes i just have things that i feel like saying and i figure, if its on my bookmark bar i might as well use it lol

anyways, little recap, my april and my went rather smooth just work and play mostly, minus the fact one of dearest and closest friends in the world was hospitalized and almost left us, that would have sucked, anyways here it is mid-june, and im already trying to figure out where the time went. I totaled it up and i will have like a grand 8 days that im actually home during this entire month, but its totally cool with me. I will be in North Carolina til tom, then ill be back home for less then a day, then off to the airport to fly out to Jamaica for a mission trip, then back for 5 days, then to PCB for the annual Spiritual Life Retreat. I just met an awesome dude named Jeremy who is a pastor in Maryville at a church called remedy... this sounds like a place for peoples like me. Anyways im gonna stop rambling...

I heard Lightning once.

Well its been going well here, last night before i went to bed and then heard some huge cracks of lightning, i know hear lightning, you would have to been here to understand. So i went and stood outside and watch the storm brew for a little bit. Its amazing the things u can see when there is so little artificial light, like stars and storms brew at night. Its a really sweet experience.

I have debated continuing the blog when I get back home, any one think that is a good idea. I mean who really wants to read about what I do everyday lol. I may just depends on how i feel about it.
I hope everyone is doing well and can't wait to see everyone when i get back home.

ranch on porkchops and ketchup on pizza.

Both are which concepts I am still trying to grasp while here in Romania. So today has been really awesome  to say the least. Got to spend just hanging out with people my own age which was really cool. Something that i have wanted to do since i got here, see how people my age spend there time. Well i found out it involves playing poker( and if you know me you will know i love me a good game of poker.) sandwiches, movies and music. All of the things rank highly on my list of things i enjoy. So i hung out with these guys i would tell u there names, but truthfully i cant even attempt to spell them, for they are traditional romanian names and they putt the oddest letters in the strangest places when spelling lol. Anyways just had a good time of hanging out and getting to know people in this country that are my own age.

anyways things are continuing to go really well for me here and i have to say i am really glad that i have met some of the people that I have. I am now officially an ambassador for a Romanian organization called ' Good Samaritan' they do alot of the same things we do in chattanooga but here in Romanian, obviously and they have plans to possibly expand into other countries. So when i get back expect me to tell u all about my new found i guess 'job title'

a breakfast for the history books.

So I just had a breakfast that should go down in the history books for me as the strangest one ever. I walk and the sweet lady who makes most of my meals greets me and talk a little in what very little broken english she knows and what little Romanian I know and she tells me it will just a minute til breakfast i say ok. I she her back there as always getting bread out(literally served with every meal) and then i see her slice up some salam and cheese, so i was think awesome meat cheese and bread, its actually one of my favorite breakfasts here. Well then i see her go to the sink and wash something then cut it up, i couldnt really tell what it was. Then she pulls out a can of potted meat and scoops a huge scope of it on my plate... at this point im getting confused. She hands me my food and its Salam, a soft cheese(im not sure what kind it is but it spreads like butter), bread, potted meat, and cut up radishes. So at this point i think I know i have never had radishes before that i could recall that i really liked and the potted meat looked more like refried beans, but if you know me then you know my mentality to food, try everything once and then try it a second time to make sure the first bite wasn't a bad one. Now I will say i wasn't as apprehensive as when i was served boiled liver and creamed spinach by different people here previously, but I still was a little surprised by the presentation. So I stuck with my ways and tried everything on a piece of like a mini-sandwhich and it all tasted good together so i thought now i have to try it all separately, which i already new i was ok with the salam and cheese, the radishes tasted like really fresh water chesnuts, and i like those so i was ok with them. then all that was left was the potted meat staring me in the face, to my surprise it actually tasted and had the consistency of refried beans with out the beans.. so i ate my breakfast i normally would thanked Bueni(the lady who cooks for me) and now im writing about it.

tonight

Well tonight has been really cool. I have experienced alot in just tonight. I met up with Costica and Razven and we went to Antonio's(a local hangout) and we just had a great time. I got to watch Romania play Bosnia in futball(soccer) and they were winning when i left. The people treat futball just like we treat american football. There was so much excitement and celebration when they would score and displeasure when the other team would make attempts to score. All in all i had a great time just hanging out with those guys and getting to really see how romanians hang out and watch sports.. this to me was alot like watching sports back home. It really made me miss home alot. They asked me about american soccer, I laughed and said it sucked, everyone there agreed that European Soccer Clubs are alot better then there american counter parts. To touch on the rest of day, I just lazed about honestly and did nothing and just a great lazy saturday. In the morning I will be going to church where a couple of the locals attend  and hopefully it will be the up lifting experience i need during what has become an unexpected trying time. Although all I cant really complain I have a roof over my head and a warm place to sleep so I am doing better then alot of people in this world. I was told today that my Romanian is getting better, but i still feel like i have barely begin to grasp the language. I have another meeting with Adi and Nikki tomorrow, about which I am really excited. Hope everyone at home is doing well.

Life is one big improvisation.

So my sister and I, ironically on National Goof Off Day, were joking about Improv and i said Life is one big improvisation. We laughed and i kinda just played it off and normal David banter. Anyways i started to think about it and there is truth in it. Life really is one big improvisation. No matter how hard you try to plan out your everyday life there is no real way to account for everything that happens. For example, I wake up in the morning with a basic idea of the places i will be, but i never no who else will be there so therefore i have to just be ready at the spur of the moment to just improv my life. I know its a little crazy sounding but if you think of it as simply as living life, you are basically improving everything you do.... You feel me?

ugh.

So right now to put it nicely, I am in a rather enraged state. A little back info, I came to Romania, which you know if you are reading this, to try to help start an outreach to the poor and homeless of the city I am in, Beius, anyways... The people who are my 'contacts' here met with me today and essentially told me that they had no idea of my intentions while i was here and they criticized they way i tried to do ministry. So when i asked them about different things and honestly challenged them on things they had promised to me, they would either change the subject, or they would say well we have many responsibilities while we are here and basically if you dont approach us with a schedule of deadlines and goals we wont even be able to review or help you in anyway. I really dont want to slander against them, but they are really useless to me at this point.

On another note, Got the guy who needed the money for his id the rest of it so he can go and get it all taken care of.

today.

Today, went really well. I woke up this morning and walked my mom to the school where she got to teach a spanish and english lesson, which she said went really well but she was rather tired afterwards. So this afternoon, she wanted to rest. So Kathleen and I went out for a little bit of time in town. She had seen the pencil cases that the kids had at school and liked them so of course she wanted one, so we got her one. She got to Kosmin, Buli, Melinda, Joseph and a few other people that i hang out with. Then from there we went to have a soda with Costica and sit and talk with him and just hang out for a bit. Then she wanted to come back to orphanage so she could rest a little and get used to the time change a bit. All in all a good day so far.

well, deep subject i know

Well currently I am at about the half way mark of my stay here in Romania. I have to say at the very least it has been an eye opening experience so far. It is alot harder to do the simple things here, that  you take advantage at home. For example, being able to have a car, getting a duplicate ID in a couple of hours, or even being able to find a some kind of part time work while you are out of work... The list goes on and on. Anyways I have learned alot about myself and alot about how to really help people and to change this world we live in. I am always looking for ways here to help people, some ways its easy by just maybe buying someone a meal or sometimes its less simple, like having to explain to someone that just giving them a hand out to pay rent or something is only gonna benefit them short term and that they need to learn what it is to earn a true living instead of relying on a sponsorship. I really have lots of stories to share with everyone some i just would rather share in person then rather on the internet.

today.

Today has been interesting to say the very least. Started out by making my way to Tinca to help Costica to get his ID and ended up having to kill about 3 hours of time. So we went to a pool hall of sorts and played chess and pool with this really cool older gentleman. Found out he has been to Tennessee before because of his grandfather being in prison there some time ago, part of me thought that was cool, but at the same time had to suck to come to the US just to see some one in jail. Anyrate, i lost terribly at chess and billards i faired ok but still did not come out with a win. Costica was extra happy today because he is literally 15 lei(5 dollars) away from having his proper ID and then he will be able to get a job. He was so happy and proud that he has come so far in the process. Then tonight i went down to Antonio's , which a local bar of sort where alot of the people we minister to hang out. To make a really long story short, get there hang out for a while, Costica teaches me some useful Romanian and then there was a fight, over what i am still unsure of but Costica insisted that I leave so I did. From what little i understood it was over something petty and was told that it better that I not get involved, to which i agreed and left. The owners where apologetic that it happened while i was there, i told them it wasnt there fault they cant control what people do sometimes and said that the situation wouldn't deter me from returning. Hope all is well Stateside.

The spirit was moving and just had a great time even though i understood very little of what was being said, still trying to get a handle on this language which is rather difficult to learn... any rate have just had a lazy sunday and tonight i am going to a really big youth worship service here in beius, i have heard it is awesome i am rather excited. Well just wanted to give everyone a short recap of the day so far and thanks for all the thoughts and prayers.

Wonderful day and night.

Well today was absolutely amazing. This morning had a breakfast that just made the day start properly, salam eggs and cheese, followed by chopping the wood as they call(splitting firewood) then an afternoon with Cristina seeing beius from the point of a local... it was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!! Tried some interesting sandwich, cant remember the name but it was close to a panini. Then we just drove around and talked and saw beius. From their i made my way back to the coffee house for our second 'soup' kitchen night. We served pizza which was a crowd favorite. 45 people who really are in need came and ate and fellowshipped it was beautiful. I will post pics when I get un lazy. Santa(pronounced Shanta) gave us a gift of some fantastic wine and now i am writing while eating a slice of pizza myself and tasting some fine wine.

Something something something else.

well i just spent the last four hours... thats right 4 hours talking with Cristina at the coffee house. We talked about how we both came to know God, about what are callings are, we literally talked about anything and everything and her english was better then she let on lol. She is truely an awesome women of God and im truely blessed to know her. We talked about the soup kitchen only briefly lol, which was the premise for our conversation, but whatever im not complaining it was nice to meet someone who can/will talk as much as i do and understands their true calling. Now i did learn that they do a couple different 'menu' options which i thought was cool... I am learning that making American style food for the out reach i am wanting to do hear probably wouldnt go over so well... but im hoping to find out how to make some traditional romanian dishes that might be inexpensive and still provide all the necessary nutrients. Anyrate, tonight we are going to one of the ladies who works at the coffee house  house for dinner tonight which excites me cause the more and more of this culture i experience i love it more and more.

Something something something

I really had nothing better to title this, so something seemed fitting. This morning I was supposed to go to the market on the other side of town and then to another guy's house, but i decided to take my time getting ready and so my dad went ahead of me. I was under the impression i remembered how to get to these places, but quickly released when i started walking I had no clue where i was going and ended giving myself the self guided not so sure where you are tour of Beius. I really wish i would have taken the camera i had the opportunity to take so many pictures of so many things, but alas i didnt. now i am sitting in the coffee house waiting to meet with a girl named Cristina, who speaks English(thank God) and we are gonna talk about the soup kitchen her church does, and also im gonna pick her brain about the local community and culture.

so the past few days.

The past few days have been a little bit of a blur. I will recap them for you.
Monday Went to Casa Iosif, the girls orphanage, and helped our friend Feri as he says chop the wood for the week. That entailed splitting all the logs for the heating system, my dad and feri handled that as i was not interested in splitting the big wood lol. I ended splitting enough wood for cooking for like 2.5 weeks, after which i was told to stop because if u split to much they will use it all. I still have lots to learn about this culture.
Tuesday- We went and toured three orphanages in a town called Tinca, these orphanages were for Mentally handicapped kids. We found out that they are government ran and that the government will be pulling funding for a lot of the maintenance and up keep. So they asked if we could help, we said we would do our best to try. we then went to basically an institution for mentally handicapped and handicapped adults... it sadden me to see some of them there because that institution will take most of the budgets cuts when the EU takes away money.
Today-  dad went to a different city to meet one of our friends mother, who is sick and dying, to pray with her. He is gonna be gone most of the day so that left me in Beius by myself. So this morning i went to the orphanage and helped Feri work on some landscaping and had lunch. now im just relaxing in the coffee shop :D Tonight i am going to a different pentecostal church for some special service.

Black History Month.

In the spirit of black history month i want to quote Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed."

eh.

Well the past little bit, especially today has been rather trying. One of the major things we are struggling with while we are here in Romania, is explaining to some of the people we want to work with, that we are no here to sponsor them and buy them what ever they want. We are trying to get a hold on what it cost for someone to live here and survive above the poverty line. Which is harder to explain since most of them think we are very wealthy and in comparison to what most of them make, if they even do,  we appear wealthy. We are also running into problems trying to get the ministry off the ground, for many reason some are simple others are basic promises that are not being held.. i wont go into great detail but just keep us in your prayers and that God will continue to open doors and show us why we are really here.

as always Keep it classy and safe

GOOD MORNING

Most stuff about stuff.

Well today has been an awesome day, its roughly midnight here in beautiful Romania. The temperature is approximately a daunting -3 degrees, man is it hot lol. Today I worked and almost completed a video that i am making for the H*ART art gallery, which i believe i already mentioned, but im gonna mention it again. Today after lunch we went to the Children Center( i cant remember how to spell it in Romanian and you probably wouldnt know what it meant so this works for both of our benefits) which is ran by the Roman Catholic church, met an awesome women of God named Sister Maria. She showed us many pictures and told stories about all the children they are helping and still are helping in Beius, this women deserves a nobel peace prize or some kind of cool award. Then from there we had a short snow ball fight with Feri, a really awesome Romanian dude that speaks pretty good english having him around is rather beneficial, then we came back to the flat and made a list for a BBQ/worship service we are having at one of our friends houses tomorrow night, we are making my favorite Romanian dish which i am extremely excited about. Then pops and Feri went to go meet with our friend and i stayed back to just kind have some me time, which included some video editing facebooking and a little video gaming :D :D :D. Then when Feri and pops made it back to the flat we went to the orphanage and had dinner with 5 of the 8 girls from last night, tonights menu was grilled cheese and salami(ham) sandwiches.. i ate like 5 they were awesome. we then spent a little time with the girls just talking in Romspanglish(a clever blend of Romania and English and Spanish) its not the most orthodox way of communicating but it gets the job done. Then after dinner we went shopping for the BBQ and then bought a few snacks for around the flat, then met up with some more friends(rebecka, cosmen, costica, and vasile) we went out so they could get food and then to see vasile house and then from there we returned to the flat were i am typing this. I will post more tomorrow but now im tired and would like this thing called sleep.

Blog numero dos

Well this is blog number two. I would like to say I am getting the hang of this, but that would be a lie. So I can't remember where I left off in my last blog so I will just pick up with what I did yesterday. We went to the supermarket at some point and for roughly 11 dollars American we bought some drinks, coffee, and snacks. The cool part is that in the states the coffee we bought and the 2 2.5L we bought have cost the entire 11 dollars. Anyrate, yesterday we met up with more of our friends here and spent part of the day with them, one of them Costica, gave my dad a rather large painting... we are still trying to figure out the logical way to get it home seeing as it will not fit to well in a suitcase. Then yesterday we just lazed about the flat(apartment) for a bit then went to dinner with probably the 8 best dinner companions ever. These 8 companions where the little girls from the orphanage where we eat most of our meals. We ate dinner spoke with them in what little english they knew and what even littler romanian we speak. Then after dinner we played "FREEZE" similar to American freeze tag but basically entailed me and dad chasing them around a room for 30 minutes or so. Afterwards we met up with some friends and went for coffee and just stayed in the town center and shot a few games of pool. It continues to SNOW here, normally i would be excited by this, but its -5 degrees Celsius on average here in the morning and only warms up to a 1 or 2 so its quite chilly and if u know me you know i despise being cold. Today I am working on finishing up a video i started when i was home for H*ART Gallery, its an art gallery on E. Main st for homeless and disadvantaged artists. I am also working on designing plans for some soccer goals we want to build for a couple of the local parks here in Beius for the children who can't afford to pay to play on the nice fields. I am hoping that after designing them, we will be able to find all the necessary building materials and tools, some things just don't translate well here. We are also trying to get a meeting with the mayor of Beius so that we can get it ok'ed to build these goals. I found out last night that in fact do not have Monster Energy drinks in Romania, I was extremely saddened, for most of you know this is a staple in my daily life... I have reverted to drinking coffee.... not quite the same but it does the job. Well I am running out of things to say currently. Thanks again for all the prayer and thoughts... if you havent seen  yet i posted a video on facebook of yours truely.

Made it safe to Budapest/Romania

Well I know I had said that I probably was leaning away from doing a blog, but I changed my mind.
So I made it to budapest on the 19th and to Romania last night (the 23rd). Just a short recap of my travels, arrived in ATL and made it from the front door of the airport all the way to our concourse in less then an hour, this is extremely unheard of, we found out that you can check your bags outside the airport and skip going through an hour plus of waiting in lines . When we got to Hungary, we went to our hotel (Hotel Csaszar) and to say the least the rooms were a bit less then we expected. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhhHlsMoNS0(this is a link to a tour we did on youtube). Made a skype in the process of all this (David.Kidwell) havent a clue how to use it but i have it lol. We were in Budapest for the Central/Southern European UMC consultation on working with the Roma(gypsy). This consultation proved to be more informative then i ever imagined, i learned more about just working in missions then just working with the Roma. Also learned that when you buy bottled water the pink cap does not mean its for women, it means that it is regular water, blue caps means it is carbonated(or according to a man from astonia, with gas) and green cap is mineral water with gas. I have much more to tell everyone, but have to go back out into the city.
Keep it classy and safe, David
